IDEAL

The process for deliberate achievement.

IDEAL guides the planning and effort toward whatever you want to improve, achieve or become — in life or in business.

Achieve by Steven Robert Young
Origin

A process formalized from years of observation.

IDEAL was introduced in Steven Robert Young's book Achieve. It is generally described as “the most natural process for our development and achieving ambitious goals,” but its use extends beyond goal achievement: it can serve as a model for planning success and a lifestyle for self-development and more meaningful living.

Before the process

Know the subject. Know the start point.

01

Know your charge

Understand the subject deeply enough to determine the right goal for what you want to accomplish.

02

Know your start point

Assess whether you can meet the goal's demands and identify the assets and gaps that could affect success.

03

Then apply IDEAL

Use the process to move from intent through action, assessment and improvement.

The framework

Five characteristics. One continuous process.

I

Intend

Define what success means. Establish a clear success point and a strong vision of what you intend to achieve.

D

Direct

Choose the strategy, outline the process and decide how the work will be done.

E

Engage

Prepare the people, resources, standards, schedule, milestones and safeguards that support performance.

A

Assess

Verify progress and results so decisions are based on evidence rather than assumption.

L

Learn

Turn experience into better decisions, better methods and continuous improvement.

Who it serves

IDEAL is relevant wherever improvement matters.

Goal-oriented people, business owners, trainers, consultants, coaches, managers, team leaders, sales and marketing professionals, health and fitness enthusiasts, and anyone serious about self-development can apply the process.
